About 12% of women in the United States encounter problems when trying to become pregnant, according to statistics from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Although the causes are so varied, they require various tests to diagnose them accurately, there are alternatives that may help reverse the situation, as in the case of assisted reproduction. One of the most viable options in this regard is in vitro Fertilization (IVF).
Although this is a complex procedure, it offers real hope of pregnancy and involves the insemination of an egg fertilized by a sperm, your partner or an optimal donor. The resulting embryos are transferred to the woman’s uterus, where they will be developed.
IVF is recommended to couples in which the woman has problems with ovulation cycles, endometriosis or blockages in the fallopian tubes, and the man has a low count or low sperm motility. However, it is a procedure which involves several steps.
First, between day 8 and 14 of the menstrual cycle, a woman will administer a fertility stimulant drug to produce more than one mature egg to be fertilized. The patient shall also apply a synthetic hormone that matures and controls the release of such eggs.
As the cycle progresses, the woman should go frequently to the clinic where she is treated, the blood hormone levels should be monitored, and egg maturation should be monitored by ultrasound and a general check of the body. Once the eggs are ready, they will be removed. It is an outpatient and painless procedure, as only a needle is inserted through the vaginal wall. You can go home just a couple hours after the procedure.
If it’s decided that the patient’s partner will provide the semen specimen, the sample will be given either before the egg extraction, or sometime during the same day. Otherwise, specialists can suggest a sperm donor with a good genetic profile. Once the eggs and semen are collected, the laboratory is responsible for combining and incubating for one night. If this does not happen, it is performed by an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where they inject it directly into the mature egg.
Three days following fertilization, it is possible to view a set of cells or embryo and, on the fifth day, the separation of fluid and tissue can discern between what will be the placenta and the baby. At this stage, the specialist will assess which embryos are the most viable and then place them in the woman’s uterus using a catheter. It is noteworthy that the success of this treatment depends on many factors, but one of them is the woman’s age, reproductive status, and the number of embryos that are introduced.
If the embryo implantation in the uterine wall is successful, it will continue its development and become a baby. Two weeks following implantation, the patient may have a blood pregnancy test by blood to determine her status. However, it is important to mention that even if implanting more than one embryo represents greater opportunities, it also increases the risk of having a multiple pregnancy, but the specialist will evaluate how many are suitable for each agency.
The estimated time of such treatment is six weeks on average and the cost ranges from between US$ 5,000 to US$ 11,000 depending on the type of procedures to be carried out. IVF treatment is considered one of the most effective.
Med&ART Consulting has the latest technology and updated specialists, not to mention the constant evaluation of our professionals.
There are many aspects and scenarios to be taken into account. According to the Society for Assisted Reproduction in the United States, 35.9% of in vitro fertilization resulted in pregnancy, but only 29.4% resulted in the birth of a baby. Besides that, in the case of women over 34, the chances of pregnancy with assisted reproduction go down to 40%.
Your lifestyle and your partner will be affected. In addition to spending on large doses of hormones, stress and expectations can affect your relationship. It is important to remain positive, united and supportive. What is truly vital is contemplating plans for the future, if everything goes well and plans for next steps if you do not achieve success on the current cycle.
Speaking of the disadvantages of IVF, it seems appropriate to mention that although you can’t put a price on the benefits, it is not a risk-free process. The first is the possibility of an ectopic or tubal pregnancy, or the deviation of the embryo in the fallopian tube, which ends inserted there.
On the other hand, by taking many fertility drugs you may develop ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Do not be alarmed, this happens to a mere 10% of patients, but for a while, the woman may develop many eggs, the ovaries may slightly increase their size and fluid buildup would be presented in the abdominal cavity. The symptoms disappear on their own, but constant monitoring is recommended if there is weight gain, dizziness or pelvic pain.
Finally, statistics show that 20% of IVF treatments fail for various reasons that do not fall on the parents, clinic or specialist. Even so, the statistics also show that there are more cases of success and, if so, just remember this process as a small journey to happiness, which Med&ART Consulting will support you through.
